COOLING DOWN:

"The Heat on Hot WORK Conditions - The Struggle...

breaking heat was unbearable even for the summer season. The unusually warm weather began in June and culminated into merciless heat wave, especially during
the first weeks of August. With both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining
high, often in triple digit numbers, large numbers of vulnerable people succumbed to
the unrelenting heat and New York City was not exempt to the dangerous temperatures. The city experienced the highest temperatures in over 51 years. More...

   *     Department of Education Environmental Health division is currently working with the NYC Department
of Health to come up with a protocol for testing and possible removal of caulk containing PCBs in
schools. As it stands now, they will be targeting approximately 300 schools built between 1940 and 1980.
Nine schools were tested, six were found to have elevated PCB levels in caulk on window sills and door
frames. One school, PS 199 had elevated levels of PCBs in the cafeteria. The cafeteria was immediately
cleaned and then re-opened. Below is the link to a UFT fact sheet on this issue.

    *     New York State Education Law Section 2560 provides School Aides, Health Aides and Family
Paraprofessionals with the same protection as other Board of Education employees who accompany
students to hospitals, clinics, etc. School Aides, Health Service Aides and Family Paraprofessionals
will be paid at their regular rate of pay for all time worked while accompanying students to hospitals,
clinics, etc. These employees will not be asked to make medical decisions on behalf of the students.

     *    Arrest Procedures For Employees: Chancellor's Regulation C-105 states that all employees
of the Department of Education must immediately report their arrest to the Office of Personnel
Investigation (OPI). The Department of Education (DOE) is linked to the Division of Criminal Justice
Service (DCJS); therefore, once an employee of the DOE is fingerprinted from a precinct and their
prints are forwarded to DCJS, OPI is notified. The following outlines the responsibilities of the employee,
field office, Supervisors/SFSM and Human Resources.
