* Department
of Education Environmental Health division is currently working with the NYC
Department
of Health to
come up with a protocol for testing and possible removal of caulk containing
PCBs in
schools. As
it stands now, they will be targeting approximately 300 schools built between
1940 and 1980.
Nine schools
were tested, six were found to have elevated PCB levels in caulk on window sills
and door
frames. One
school, PS 199 had elevated levels of PCBs in the cafeteria. The cafeteria was
immediately
cleaned and
then re-opened. Below is the link to a UFT fact sheet on this issue.
